AMBASSADOR MORALES HIGHLIGHTS MILESTONE 80TH ANNIVERSARY OF PHILIPPINES-AUSTRALIA RELATIONS ON SBS FILIPINO

MELBOURNE — Philippine Ambassador to Australia Antonio Morales highlighted the 80th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations during a podcast interview with SBS Filipino on April 20, emphasizing the growing role of the Filipino diaspora in strengthening bilateral ties.

Morales discussed the expanding Philippines-Australia partnership, noting steady growth in bilateral relations marked by increasing Australian business investments in the Philippines and growing Philippine capital flowing into Australia. The two countries elevated their relationship to a Strategic Partnership in 2023.

The ambassador stressed that people-to-people connections, particularly through the Filipino community abroad, have been central to deepening the relationship. More than 400,000 Filipinos now reside in Australia, making them the fifth-largest migrant community and the third-largest Asian-Australian group in the country.

Filipinos contribute significantly to Australia's economy and society, working across healthcare, construction, skilled trades and education sectors. The Filipino-Australian population has grown by 65 percent over the past decade, representing one of the fastest-growing migrant groups in the nation.

Looking ahead, Morales said Philippines-Australia relations will prioritize expanding trade and investment opportunities, strengthening defence and maritime security cooperation, advancing education partnerships and upholding the rule of law.

For Filipino-Australians, this milestone recognition underscores the Australian government's acknowledgment of their substantial contributions to Australian society and the economy. The emphasis on people-to-people connections directly validates the importance of community engagement and diaspora networks in shaping bilateral policy between the two nations.

The podcast episode will air soon on SBS Filipino.
