MELBOURNE — Ambassador Antonio Morales met with Filipino community members in Victoria on April 21, commending their contributions to Australian society and their role as "true ambassadors" of Philippines-Australia friendship.
Morales spoke at a reception hosted by the Philippine Consulate General in Melbourne, led by Consul General Jesus Gary Domingo. The gathering brought together community leaders, professionals and stakeholders who shared Filipino street food.
The ambassador highlighted the 80th anniversary of bilateral relations between the two nations. He recalled that the Philippines and Australia fought together during World War II, including at the Battle of Leyte Gulf, commemorated by a plaque at the Shrine of Remembrance.
Morales noted that President Manuel L. Quezon sought refuge in Australia during the war, briefly staying in Melbourne while establishing the Philippine government-in-exile. He said these historical connections demonstrated the depth of ties between both countries.
The ambassador emphasized expanding cooperation in defense, citing recent Philippine Navy engagements in Australia. He pointed to growing economic ties, particularly the Victoria International Container Terminal at the Port of Melbourne, one of the largest investments by a Philippine company in Australia.
Morales recognized Filipino community organizations for advancing shared goals and thanked leaders for their dedication and initiatives.
For Filipino-Australians in Victoria, this diplomatic engagement signals strengthened government-to-government ties that may facilitate easier visa processes, business opportunities and recognition of the community's economic contributions through major projects like the container terminal.
Victoria hosts the second-largest Filipino community in Australia, with more than 95,000 people of Filipino heritage, including over 68,000 born in the Philippines.
