MELBOURNE — Philippine Ambassador Antonio Morales and Consul General Gary Domingo met with Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology officials Tuesday to expand bilateral cooperation in higher education, research, innovation and vocational training.
Vice-President International Layton Pike led the RMIT delegation, highlighting the university's Southeast Asian presence in Singapore, Indonesia and Vietnam. Pike expressed strong interest in deepening engagement with Philippine institutions through articulation pathways, academic franchising, branch campuses and joint degree programs.
Morales emphasized flexible delivery modes including online, blended and distance learning opportunities. He stressed the importance of harmonizing education standards across transnational education initiatives.
Professor Pappas identified opportunities in health-related fields, including medical technology, nursing and laboratory science. He highlighted potential collaboration in higher degree research and PhD programs, noting the success of Filipino academics in allied health sciences.
Both sides recognized workforce shortages in clinical professions and committed to improving healthcare outcomes, particularly in remote and underserved communities.
The meeting reinforced a 2022 Memorandum of Understanding on Scientific and Technical Cooperation between RMIT and the Philippine Department of Science and Technology. The MOU supports joint initiatives in health, additive manufacturing and food innovation.
RMIT currently enrolls more than 300 Philippine students. Over 199 study in higher education programs, predominantly postgraduate, while 101 participate in vocational education courses.
