MELBOURNE — Philippine Ambassador Antonio Morales met with Victoria's MP Wayne Farnham on April 21 to discuss strengthening parliamentary ties and economic cooperation between the Philippines and Australia, with a focus on trade, security and skilled migration.
Morales, accompanied by Consul General Gary Domingo, outlined key areas of bilateral collaboration during the meeting at the Philippine Consulate General in Melbourne. These include counter-terrorism, cybersecurity, maritime security, law and justice, trade and investment, and education initiatives.
The Ambassador highlighted the Victoria International Container Terminal at the Port of Melbourne as a significant Philippine investment in Australia. VICT, operated by International Container Terminal Services, Inc., is the nation's first fully automated container terminal and ranks among the world's most advanced facilities.
Morales encouraged greater two-way trade and investment between the two countries to create additional economic opportunities for both nations. He emphasized the potential for deeper commercial engagement beyond existing partnerships.
Farnham, Co-Chair of the Philippines-Australia Friendship Group, expressed strong support for the bilateral relationship. He backed exploration of transnational education models, particularly in construction, to align training with Australian standards and improve labor mobility between the countries.
Consul General Domingo noted the significant contributions of Victoria's Filipino community to Australia's workforce. He praised their integration into Australian society and active civic participation in local communities.
Filipinos represent a major component of Australia's skilled migration pipeline. The Philippines accounted for approximately 15 percent of Australia's skilled migration applications in 2025, reflecting both the country's demand for qualified workers and Filipino professionals' commitment to meeting those needs.
